British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
