Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
