On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
